VIRGINIA WALKABILITY ACTION INSTITUTE | OUR WORK ON PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

In 2023, PSG participated in the Virginia Walkability Action Institute, hosted by the Virginia Department of Health and Equitable Cities. As part of our work in the program ,we focused on how large, main roads in the Richmond region like Broad St, Midlothian Turnpike, and others are dangerous to people walking, biking, and waiting for the bus.

We teamed up with Virginia Interfaith Power and Light to take a closer look into what factors make these roads more dangerous for pedestrians and what could be done to make these roads safer for all users, using Chamberlayne Ave as an example. Our work included physically walking the Chamberlayne Ave corridor from which we created a video and report detailing the current conditions and recommendations for ways it could be improved. You can read our full report on Chamberlayne Ave here.

A Regional Perspective

Pedestrian safety on arterial roads is not just an issue along Chamberlayne Ave or in the City of Richmond, but a regional one. We created a Story Map that shows where pedestrian fatalities are occurring and adds in factors that can help show why some areas are more dangerous to walk in than others.
