Henrico County

Henrico County is characterized as suburban in 4 of the 5 districts and as rural in the Varina district.  In a few decades the region has seen Henrico's Short Pump mushroom from cow pastures and emerge as a new core of the region - with its own set of opportunities and challenges including traffic concerns for this auto-oriented community.  Innsbrook, built decades ago as an office park a few miles east of Short Pump, is now reinventing itself as a mixed-use community.  Varina's residents have made it clear that they want their historically agricultural district to remain so.

PSG  has worked with citizens, organizations, and the Henrico County Planning Department to ensure balanced growth and stakeholder involvement in Henrico County's future.  PSG was particularly involved in the recent passage of the 2026 Henrico County Comprehensive Plan, and helped establish Envision Henrico, with primary goals of preserving the rural character of the Varina district and ensuring transportation options and mixed-use development in other districts.

Opportunities for Henrico include reinvesting in existing infrastructure, such as along the underutilized stretch of Broad Street, Route 250, between the City of Richmond border and Short Pump.  View the map, courtesy of Piedmont Environmental Council, below.

The 2010 Census population was 306,935, up 17% from 2000.  Click here for a map of 2010 results including growth rates.
