Healthy Community Choices

PSG is proud to partner with the Robins Foundation and the Southern Environmental Law Center on our theme for 2011: making the connection between community design, the environment, and health.

Thank you to those who were part of our Walk and Talk events this Spring.  We brought together planning, development, and other experts and stakeholders to explore through presentations, discussion and walking tours three places that illustrate the potential health impact of choices we make in how and where we grow:

  • Urban Walk and Talk at Lincoln Mews in Richmond's Northside.  In partnership with James River Green Building Council and Better Housing Coalition.
  • Rural Walk and Talk at Bandana Farm in Hanover's Beaverdam District.  In partnership with Capital Regiona Land Conservancy and in collaboration with Coalition for Hanover's Future.
  • Suburban Walk and Talk at Bon Secours Virginia's Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville.  In partnership with Bon Secours Virginia.  In collaboration with Tricycle Gardens and Coalition for Hanover's Future.

Our 4th Annual River City Saunter will culminate the series and includes a walking and bus tour as well as a Healthy Community Choices Symposium.

At the Saunter, Southern Environmental Law Center and PSG will co-release Trip Pollard's report, Healthy Community Choices.  The report will provide an overview of the connections between transportation, land use, and health, the potential health benefits of smarter growth; profile the places featured in the four walking tours; and examine policies and practices to promote healthy community design.
